It seems, for now, that Apple just can’t give them what they want.

The latest Apple TV device was intended to be a revolution in the way people use and interact with home streaming devices. Apple placed a lot of emphasis upon its use of apps and a brand new TVOS system, but it seems that one of Apple’s unique selling points for Apple TV may never come to light. Having initially stated that Apple TV would play host to original programming and access to a subscription-based TV channel, cable channel executives are saying talks have gone cold. CBS CEO Les Moonves says his company has had “no recent talks” with Apple, stating in an interview with CNN Money: “We had conversations a while back, and we haven't had recent conversations with them.” Still, apparently “the phone is always ringing” with others trying to partner up with CBS for original programming. Apple’s TV service was believed to cost around $40 per month to view a selection of premium channels, alongside some original programming. It’s believed – although not known – that Apple had to put its plans on hold as TV networks wanted more money for the deal than Apple was happy to agree to. Apple has somewhat of a history when it comes to perturbing media businesses, reportedly having faced a similar situation with record companies on the advent of Apple Music. The major difference this time around is that many of the channels Apple is looking to partner with already have apps on the App Store, meaning there’s less incentive to join unless Apple really makes them a sweet deal.
