Flat imaging sensors have evolved from film-based systems where spherically curved pieces of film would be highly impractical to make and impossible to wind through a camera onto a spool. With this patent, Apple has freed the smartphone camera from a design legacy rooted in film photography. According to the example diagrams in the patent application, the camera itself should measure around 1.8mm across, by 1.95mm deep from the camera’s glass front plate to the rear of the sensor. By contrast, the iPhone 6 Plus camera module measures 10.6mm by 9.3mm by 5.6mm. The camera design could find itself used in a variety of devices, not just smartphones. Anywhere where space is at a premium would benefit from the new, smaller device. However, when used in phones, it could help reduce unsightly lens bulges and potentially make more space for dual-camera setups.
